Intrusion

Overview

Vehicle intrusion refers to the movement or deformation of specific areas of a vehicle during a crash, where parts of the vehicle may collapse or deform and intrude into the interior. This intrusion can pose a risk to occupants, compromise vehicle safety, and/or increase the likelihood of injury, depending on the severity of the intrusion. Intrusion is typically measured using x, y, and z coordinates to compare the pre-test and post-test positions of specific intrusion points (as shown in Figure 1) [1][2].

Inputs

  • Pre-test and post test x, y, and z coordinates for the intrusion points

Calculations

  1. Calculates the total distance each intrusion point traveled from the pre-test position to the post-test position
    • Calculates the resultant distance with the x, y, and z pre-test and post-test coordinates for each point
  2. Generates 3d graph of intrusion points at the pre-test state and post-test state (as seen in Figure 2)
  3. Generates bar chart with severity of the resultant intrusion values at 5 regions (as seen in Figure 3)
TotalDistanceTraveled(intrusionpoint)=[(xfinal)(xinitial)]2+[(yfinal)(yinitial)]2+[(zfinal)(zinitial)]2Total\,Distance\,Traveled\,(intrusion\,point) = \sqrt{[(x_{final}) - (x_{initial})]^2 + [(y_{final}) - (y_{initial})]^2 + [(z_{final}) - (z_{initial})]^2}
